What Are Major Events That Happened In Chicago?

A dramatic scene of Chicago engulfed in flames, with wooden buildings burning and people evacuating in the chaos

The Great Fire of Chicago and How Strong and Rational City Reformed Itself

The most dramatic incident in Chicago history was the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. It started on October 8 and burned for approximately two days, consuming almost 17,000 buildings and displacing almost 100,000 people without shelter. Although most would think it started in a barn, dry weather and windy winds caused it to spread rapidly and uncontrollably. As consisting basically of wooden structure, little hope was given for the city to contain the flames.

Chicago, though, would not come to be characterized by the disaster. Rebuilding initiatives began essentially overnight and resulted in superior codes and architecture for a new era. Chicago would become an innovator in high-rise buildings by replacing wooden structures with steel-frame buildings. The city came out of it more creative and stronger than it had ever been, not crumbling down.

The Age of Prohibition and Why Chicago Became the Crime and Bootlegging Capital

When it was made illegal to sell alcohol during the 1920s through Prohibition, Chicago became an organized crime, bootlegging, and speakeasy haven. Al Capone represented this era in establishing a gargantuan bootlegging empire, and it essentially dominated Chicago’s alcohol trade market. His name was always in the papers; people loved him, people hated him.

The most shocking incident during this era was the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, in which men disguised as policemen, who were Capone’s men, shot and killed men who belonged to one of his rival gangs. The country reeled; Chicago was equated with crime and corruption. Federal authorities ultimately caught up with Capone not for murder or other lethal offenses, but for tax evasion. The days of Prohibition ceased in 1933, but those years of clandestineness and peril and rebelliousness changed Chicago’s destiny.

The Iconic Street Demonstrations and the 1968 Democratic National Convention

Chicago became national news during the Democratic National Convention in August 1968. Politicians gather in interiors to decide the future of the nation while thousands of protesters who were incensed at the Vietnam War filled streets in front. It was tense, and protest through nonviolence soon became brutal police clashes.

Live TV footage of policemen scaring the entire nation by throwing tear gas and truncheons at protesters. The bloodshed also injured Chicago’s reputation and raised controversy over political control, freedom of speech, and law-enforcement practices. The 1967 convention, even to this day, is remembered as one of America’s most politically charged events in history.

The Chicago Cubs And The Emotional 2016 World Series Victory That Cut Off A Century Of Waiting

Chicago Cubs fans clung to hope through the centuries, even as season after season came to naught. Their last World Series title was 1908; their losing streak extended the longest in Major League Baseball history as the years went by. Legends such as the “Curse of the Billy Goat” led fans to believe their team would never win again.

Then something completely miraculous happened in 2016. The long-dormant Cub curse was finally snapped as they reached the World Series and ecstatic Game 7 facing the Cleveland Indians. The city broke out in jubilation as soon as the last out was recorded. Centuries of family generations celebrated with us, fans wept, strangers hugged, and so on. Drawing in almost five million fans, the victory parade showed just how long Chicago had been waiting for this.

The 1995 Heat Wave and the Deadly End That Revamped the Way the City Treats Its Citizens

Chicago saw some hot and cold phases, but few as sudden and deadly as this 1995 heat wave imposed on it. The mercury remained over 100 for an unprecedented five-day period in July; humidity added an extra subjective, intolerable element. Many were old, many were solitary, and they suffered and nearly 700 died.

However, the fact that up to as many of those deaths might have been prevented made it all the more tragic as a disaster. It abandoned too many residents; it underutilized cooling shelters, and citizens did not have air conditioning in their homes. The city implemented new emergency plans following that disaster, ones meant to ensure that there would never be an extreme heat event in control of the city once more. It resulted in better precautions safeguarding the most vulnerable aspects of society, but it was a bitter lesson.

Snowstorm That Brought the Entire City to Halt and the 1979 Blizzard

The winters in Chicago have been rough; but, the 1979 blizzard was different than everything. Twenty-plus inches dropped in two days in January; the city came to a standstill: vehicles stuck under snow, unable to run buses, people struggling to make it to work, and days lost without streets being cleared as citizens became frustrated, feeling neglected and at the mercy of nature and an unsympathetic city government.

It proceeded at such a glacial pace this aspect of snowplowing became central to the subsequent mayoral election. Indignant over the management of the storm, voters elected a new man who promised change. While the blizzard constituted a natural disaster, both impacts in most ways stretched considerably beyond snow-covered streets to affect shifting Chicago politics.

The Election of Harold Washington and the Hopes That Accompanied Him as Chicago’s First Black Mayor

Harold Washington was elected as Chicago’s first black mayor in 1983. Far from being another election contest, it was to engrave tracks of challenges overcome and hopes sown in once-silent areas. The city voters in all corners were mobilized by his election crusade, and in his election, an amazing symbol of progress was created.

The government of Washington was representative, and he was finding it tremendously difficult to offer equal prospects to all of her citizens. Notwithstanding his career being cut short in abrupt circumstances of his death in 1987, his memory lives on thanks to his having paved the way for others to do likewise, inspiring Chicago people to think that, indeed, anything can happen if people do stick together.
